Ecotopia
Vancouver in the heart of Ecotopia
Many years ago I was listening to a radio talk show while driving. They were interviewing Ernest Callenbach who wrote the book Ecotopia. It left a lasting impression on me. The synopsis is pretty simple. Take the North American continent and brake it down on a climatic and geographical basis.
You have the New England area; cold long winters and hot humid summers. The Tropical Southeast, The Wheat Belt, The Corn Belt and the Desert Southwest to generalize some areas.
Then take north of San Francisco over to the Sierra Nevada mountain range (which is the Cascade Range when it crosses the border of Oregon) up to and including British Columbia.
He called it Ecotopia. I've always liked that term. It kind of resonated with me for some reason. Economic or Ecologic Utopia....hmm. It has plenty of water which is essential for life, mild winters and summers. No harsh climate; no tornados or hurricanes, no massive earthquakes of which to speak. The area is a net-exporter of all agricultural goods and is, generally, a great place to live.
From my perspective, of the 5 major metropolitan areas on the West Coast the last area to come into the 'Mega' metropolitan status is the Portland/Vancouver area. There is still affordable homes and land here that the other areas do not have. The climate and especially water resources will become increasingly more important as we grow and deplete our natural resources.
